The separatist Parti Québécois has won Quebec’s provincial election but failed to secure enough seats to form a majority government.

The party, led by Paul St-Pierre Plamondon, won 59 of the 127 seats in the provincial legislature, leaving it short of the 64 seats required for a majority. The result brings the party back to power after more than a decade.
Plamondon has renewed his commitment to eventually hold a referendum on Quebec’s independence from Canada. However, he has said such a referendum would be delayed until after U.S. President Donald Trump leaves office. The result is expected to create fresh discussions about Canadian national unity.
