Fighting has intensified in Ethiopia’s Tigray region, raising fears that the renewed conflict could develop into a wider regional crisis.
Reports indicate that government forces and fighters linked to the Tigray People’s Liberation Front have engaged in clashes around Mekelle and other parts of northern Ethiopia. Airstrikes and artillery exchanges have reportedly killed at least 17 people in several locations.
The renewed violence comes several years after Ethiopia’s devastating 2020–2022 civil war. The latest conflict has also increased tensions between Ethiopia and neighbouring countries, while international actors have called for restraint and dialogue to prevent further escalation.
